EuroGOOS is attending the Ocean for Climate Days at the UNFCCC’s 21st Conference of the Parties, COP21, in Paris. It is for the first time at a high-level climate event that the ocean has a strong and sound voice – supported by numerous marine research networks, think-tanks and NGOs. The COP21 Ocean for Climate Days aim at raising awareness among the general public, policymakers and economic actors of the major role of the ocean in climate change.
The marine science and oceanography community is united around an obvious fact – the ocean is key in the Earth’s climate regulation. Ocean observing, forecasting and modelling are prerequisites to obtain the data and information needed for the societal and policy response to climate change. However, the ocean was absent at the COP political agenda. The Ocean for Climate Days are organized at the heart of COP21 to explain the essential need to include the ocean in the climate negotiations. The series is starting at the COP21 conference centre in Le Bourget and end at the Tara Ocean and Climate Pavilion at the iconic bridge Alexandre III on the Seine River in central Paris.
