SMHI, the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute, operates under the auspices of the Ministry of Climate and Enterprise. SMHI's mission is to serve as an expert body in meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, and climatology. This means that we manage and develop information about weather, water, and climate, providing society's functions, businesses, and the public with knowledge and qualified decision-making support.
A separate Research unit for climate and climate modelling, the Rossby Centre, was established at SMHI in autumn 1997.

SMHI is Sweden’s largest producer of physical and chemical oceanographic data and also a major producer of marine biological data.
