Global Greenhouse Gas Watch (GGGW) Modeling Workshop

Date
19/09/2023 - 21/09/2023

The 27th Conference of the Parties (Sharm El Sheikh, November 2022) “Emphasizes {…} the need to enhance coordination of activities by the systematic observation community and the ability to provide useful and actionable climate information for mitigation, adaptation and early warning systems, {…}”. In this context, since WMO Executive Council decision in June 2022, several bodies in WMO have been jointly working withing the Joint Study Group on Greenhouse Gas Monitoring on development of a concept for such a monitoring system.

This concept was approved by the 19th World Meteorological Congress on 24 May 2023. The Congress has mandated the development of an implementation plan for the Global Greenhouse Gas Watch (GGGW) within the upcoming year. GGGW comprises four key components, one of which involves the creation of a comprehensive sustained, operational model estimation of net fluxes of CO2, CH4 and N2O with a set of global surface-based and satellite-based observations and an associated data management system. To facilitate the formulation of the implementation plan and establish priority actions and steps, a series of workshops will be organized, each focusing on specific aspects of GHG monitoring.

Within this framework, WMO is organizing a “Global Greenhouse Gas Modeling Workshop” on 19-21 September 2023 in Bonn, Germany (at The 9th, Sandkaule 9-11, 53111 Bonn). The purpose of this workshop is to develop guidance from and to Member countries and partner organizations regarding the comprehensive integrated modelling system.

The workshop is primarily targeted at modeling groups with capabilities and plans to use global modeling for flux estimation in some level of coordination with other GGGW participants, and attendance is by invitation only.

The program will include presentations in oral and group discussions. Additional information regarding both programmatic content, agenda and logistics will follow in early August.
