EuroGOOS, the European component of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, is seeking a Science Officer to join its international team in Brussels.
The Science Officer will support the coordination of European ocean observing and forecasting efforts, engaging with scientific, technical, and policy communities at national, regional, and EU levels. The position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the implementation of the EuroGOOS 2030 Strategy, working with partners across Europe and beyond.
Main responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
- Contribute to the coordination and scientific support of EuroGOOS activities, including the facilitation of communities of practice, meeting organisation, documentation, and reporting.
- Contribute to EU-funded projects and joint initiatives advancing the European ocean observing infrastructure and data landscape.
- Support the implementation of the EuroGOOS 2030 Strategy, including the enhancement of biological, biogeochemical, and climate observation domains.
- Facilitate collaboration among national and international partners and help communicate EuroGOOS activities to diverse audiences.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in oceanography, marine science, environmental science, or a related field.
- Good understanding of marine data collection, ocean observing systems, and oceanographic concepts.
- Proven ability to work in international and interdisciplinary environments.
- Excellent interpersonal, organisational, and communication skills.
- Excellent written and spoken English; knowledge of French is an advantage.
- Experience in scientific or technical writing and reporting.
- Experience in meeting organization, writing and delivering reports (written and oral), and supporting logistics.
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience in seagoing data collection or marine observing systems.
- Knowledge of ocean data management, modelling, or forecasting systems.
- Experience in EU-funded projects, technical reporting, and communication.
