Group on Earth Observations Plenary, GEO-XIII

Date
07/11/2016 - 10/11/2016

The Group on Earth Observations (GEO) community will meet to discuss the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) comprising the provision of space-based, atmospheric, oceanic and terrestrial observations of the Earth.

GEO informs decision-making through coordinated, comprehensive and sustained Earth observations, information and services. GEO initiatives support global, regional and national development programmes, as well as disaster risk reduction, protection of biodiversity and efforts to mitigate climate change. The GEO-XIII Plenary in St. Petersburg will highlight global collaboration in each of these areas, and showcase GEO’s important role in supporting communities in their efforts to help measure and monitor the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN 2030 Agenda.

A key component of the GEO week will be an exhibition providing tangible examples and achievements to inform decision-making. EuroGOOS will promote the ocean component of GEO at the ‘GEOSS for Europe’ area organized by the European Commission’s Directorate General for Research and Innovation. In addition to the EuroGOOS strategic and dissemination materials and videos, the EuroGOOS stand will feature materials from the US Integrated Ocean Observing System, US-IOOS, Copernicus Marine Service, CMEMS, European Marine Observation and Data Network, EMODnet, and an overarching European Ocean Observing System, EOOS, a framework developed jointly with the European Marine Board.

EuroGOOS Chair Erik Buch is GEO GOOS delegate and member of the GEO Programme Board, and Glenn Nolan, Secretary General, is member of the European Commission’s GEO high-level group. Dina Eparkhina, Policy and Communications Officer, will attend the GEO week in St. Petersburg and represent EuroGOOS at the plenary and side-events.
