On 5-6 October, Chile is hosting the second Our Ocean conference. The event is expected to bring together some 400 leaders from government, academia, and civil society committed to protecting the ocean. The conference with address solutions to deal with illegal fishing, marine plastic pollution, ocean acidification and its relation to climate change. Moreover, the conference will encourage the creation of marine protected areas as a tool to protect the marine ecosystem.
The concept of this Our Ocean conference follows an initiative set in motion by US Secretary of State, John Kerry. In June of 2014, Secretary Kerry organized the first high-level conference in Washington DC that brought together politicians, scientists, business people, and philanthropists from more than 90 countries.
