Open Cullen PhD Fellowship: “Hyperspectral Analysis of Blooms in Irish waTers (HABIT)”

We are pleased to share an opportunity from one of our members, the Marine Institute, which is jointly offering a funded PhD scholarship with the University of Limerick (UL).

The project, HABS: Hyperspectral Analysis of Blooms in Irish Waters, aims to transform how harmful algal blooms (HABs) are detected and monitored using drone-mounted hyperspectral imaging. This innovative research will support improved early warning systems and strengthen Ireland’s capacity to protect marine ecosystems and coastal industries.

The PhD scholar will develop new methodologies for airborne hyperspectral observations, build optical libraries of bloom-forming species, design automated classification tools, and integrate drone, satellite, and in-situ data. The position includes training at UL, the Marine Institute (Galway), and short research visits to ICMAN–CSIC in Spain.

The scholarship covers four years of fees and provides an annual stipend of €25,000.

Applications remain open until the position is filled.
