EuroGOOS is conducting an important survey to build an inventory of historical in-situ metadata (1950–2010) needed for the assimilation and validation of Copernicus Marine Service (CMEMS) reanalysis products. This activity is part of the Cross-Cutting Coordination of Copernicus Access to In-Situ, funded by the European Environment Agency (EEA) and supported by the COPE-IDEA Consortium.
Why This Matters
Historical in-situ datasets are essential for CMEMS because they:
- Enable the production of high-quality, long-term reanalysis products
- Improve the accuracy of ocean forecasts and climate assessments
- Strengthen regional and coastal services
- Support a wide range of scientific and operational applications
By expanding access to historical data, the Copernicus Marine Service can better serve users across research, policy, and operational communities.
The current survey builds on the outcomes of the COINS-3 survey and has been enhanced to support reporting of complex datasets and encourage broader participation. It takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.
