On 8-9 October 2024, the EuroGOOS Ocean Literacy Working Group (OLWG) will meet in Brussels, hosted by EuroGOOS at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences. The meeting will review best practices in ocean literacy in marine scientific organisations and prepare a training for scientists to develop or get on board with societal engagement initiatives. The training is developed within the European Commission’s EU4Ocean Coalition. Existing since 2019, the Ocean Literacy activity in EuroGOOS has been instrumental in promoting national and local initiatives at pan-European and international levels. In 2021, the working group activities received endorsement of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030, under a dedicated project named ‘Scientists for Ocean Literacy’.
