International Workshop on Sea-Level Measurement Technologies

Date
04/11/2016

The EuroGOOS Tide Gauge Task Team will hold a scientific workshop to tackle inter-comparison of sea-level measuring instruments, data processing, quality control, and emerging technologies. Furthermore, the workshop will provide a platform for the operational scientific community to discuss common priorities and challenges. A side event on altimetry and tide gauge for sea level will be hosted by the annual OST/ST international congress on Satellite Altimetry, on 3 November, at Espace Encan, La Rochelle.

Sea level is a critical variable of our environment and has a high impact on coastal populations. Tide gauges are an important tool to determine trends in mean sea level, extreme conditions (and their relation to climate change), tidal computation, geodetic applications, harbour operations and navigation, as well as sea level hazards warning systems (tsunamis and storm surges).

Recognizing this critical and increasing need of tide gauge data, EuroGOOS Tide Gauge Task Team is bringing together the tide gauge communities in the European and adjacent seas. The EuroGOOS Tide Gauge Task Team compiles information on existing sea level networks, advises operators and scientists, and supports national and regional sea level initiatives towards enhanced and sustained system.

There is no registration fee to attend the workshop.  The workshop will take place in La Rochelle, France. A side meeting on Altimetry and tide gauge for sea level will be hosted by the annual OST/ST international congress on Satellite Altimetry, on 3 November (Espace Encan, La Rochelle). Anyone wishing to attend this meeting should contact Laurent Testut (laurent.testut@legos.obs-mip.fr) in order to organize authorized access to the congress center. A small contribution (~30 €/pers.) will be asked to attend this side meeting (lunch and coffee will be provided).
