EuroGOOS is looking for a full-time scientific officer to join the team based at 231 Avenue Louise, 1050 Brussels, Belgium.
The Scientific Officer will report directly to the Secretary General of EuroGOOS and will principally undertake work on the following tasks and topics:
Support the EuroGOOS secretariat in performing its duties in a number of H2020 funded projects primarily the AtlantOS project where the focus will be on:
- Defining societal drivers for ocean observations in the Atlantic Basin;
- Collect observing system requirements from various marine and maritime users
- Development of recommendations for sustained monitoring of Essential Ocean Variables (EOVs);
- Designing the web-based monitoring tool of the Atlantic ocean observing system;
- Gather information on member state observing systems, costs and gaps in such systems and jointly formulate plans for sustaining the system with national institutes;
- Produce meeting reports, edit and proofread documents.
Qualifications and desirable attributes
The successful candidate must have the following qualifications/attributes:
- University degree in oceanography or a related discipline (higher degree at Masters or PhD level preferable);
- Familiarity with the European and global ocean observing landscape e.g. EuroGOOS organisation, Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission and its Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS), Framework for Ocean Observation, Group on Earth Observations (GEO) initiative;
- Experience of seagoing data collection or observing systems;
- Knowledge of oceanographic models or oceanographic products for marine users;
- Proven record in scientific or technical writing (including peer-reviewed publications);
- At least 4 years experience in a relevant post preferably in the marine science sector;
- Previous experience as a partner or researcher is EC funded projects;
- Fluent in spoken and written English and some knowledge of French and/or Dutch desirable;
- Proficiency with software applications including MS Office;
- Flexibility and willingness to assist in other tasks as the need arises;
- Self-motivated and resourceful, with the proven ability to multi-task and prioritize multiple assignments;
- A strong sense of cultural awareness and the ability to work with people from different nationalities;
- Strong social and presentation skills;
- Ability to work individually and as part of a small team;
- Willingness to travel from time to time.
EuroGOOS offers to the successful candidate a 3.5-year fixed purpose contract and the opportunity to work in an international and multicultural environment with a high degree of professionalism.
The salary level will follow Belgian standards and based on experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.

AtlantOS is a project funded under the EC Horizon 2020 programme with a budget of €21 million over a 4-year period. The overarching objective of AtlantOS is to promote the transition from a loosely coordinated set of existing ocean observing activities to a more integrated, efficient, sustainable and fit-for–purpose Atlantic Ocean Observing System. This will be done by advancing requirements and system design, improving the readiness of observing networks and data systems, and engaging stakeholders around the Atlantic. AtlantOS aims to support Atlantic Nations in strengthening their complementary contributions to and benefits from the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS and the Blue Planet Initiative of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS).
Founded in 1994, EuroGOOS is an International Non-Profit Association of national governmental agencies and research organisations, committed to European-scale operational oceanography within the context of the Global Ocean Observing System (IOC/GOOS). Today, EuroGOOS has 40 members from 19 European countries providing operational oceanographic services and carrying out marine research. EuroGOOS also coordinates the European Regional Operational Oceanographic Systems (ROOSes) which work towards collaboration and synergy in the regions.
