Ocean Decade Citizen Science Data Sharing Guidelines released

25 February 2026

This new publication was developed by the Decade Coordination Office for Ocean Data Sharing with support from experts and across the community and born out of discussions with Decade Actions that highlighted the need for clearer guidance on effectively managing and sharing citizen science data.

These high-level guidelines outline key principles, standards, and recommended practices, and provide practical advice for:

  • Project leaders and data managers of UN Ocean Decade Actions
  • Data Platforms (National Oceanography Data Centres and Regional Data Networks) on integrating citizen science data and supporting data quality

Citizen science is essential to expanding ocean knowledge, and good data sharing is key to maximising its impact.
