New Integrated Ocean Carbon Research (IOC-R) Report Released

23 February 2026

The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO has released the Integrated Ocean Carbon Research (IOC‑R) Report, offering the most comprehensive evaluation to date of the processes driving ocean carbon uptake.

This new assessment warns of significant uncertainties, including 10-20% differences in global estimates of ocean carbon absorption, large enough to affect climate projections and global planning.

Developed by 72 authors and 13 reviewers from 23 countries, the IOC-R Report offers the most comprehensive evaluation to date of the processes driving ocean carbon uptake and long-term storage. It also identifies priority research actions required to strengthen global climate planning in the years ahead.
