New GOOS Brief identifies priorities to strengthen global ocean observing

15 October 2026

The Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) has published a new brief, “Key recommendations to expand ocean observing and fill critical gaps in the Global Ocean Observing System”, highlighting priority gaps in ocean observations and supporting efforts to strengthen the global observing system.

The publication (GOOS-326) draws on three World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Statements of Guidance to identify common observing gaps across Essential Variables, considering both in situ and satellite observations.

By bringing together these priorities, the brief provides a useful reference for the ocean observing community to better understand where observational capabilities need to be strengthened and expanded.

The findings are particularly relevant to efforts to improve coordination between global and regional observing systems and support the development of sustained, fit-for-purpose ocean observations.
