EuroGOOS submits feedback to the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive consultation
10 March 2026
EuroGOOS has submitted a response to the European Commission's consultation on Marine environment protection – revision of EU rules, contributing to the evaluation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) and its role in protecting Europe's marine environment.
The Marine Strategy Framework Directive is the EU's main legislative framework for achieving Good Environmental Status (GES) in European seas. Its effective implementation relies on sustained and coordinated marine monitoring systems that provide reliable, long-term environmental data to support scientific assessments and evidence-based policymaking.
The EuroGOOS contribution highlights the importance of securing long-term funding for ocean observing systems, strengthening coordination and interoperability across Member States, and improving the integration of marine observations and data services, including EMODnet and Copernicus. It also emphasises the need to address fragmented governance and support innovation, capacity development, and knowledge sharing to ensure effective marine environmental monitoring.
EuroGOOS underlines its commitment to supporting the European Commission and Member States in strengthening ocean observing capabilities and ensuring that reliable marine data underpin the implementation of the MSFD and broader European ocean policy objectives.
