EuroGOOS 11th International Conference Statement
12 June 2026
We are pleased to share the Statement of the 11th EuroGOOS International Conference, held in Larnaca, Cyprus, from 18–20 May 2026 under the theme "Stronger Together" and kindly hosted by the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI). This edition was held under the auspices of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2026 and endorsed by the UN Ocean Decade.
The Statement captures the key messages and recommendations that emerged from discussions among ocean scientists, policymakers and practitioners from across Europe. It reflects a shared vision for strengthening European ocean observing and operational oceanography at a time when ocean knowledge is increasingly critical to addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, maritime safety and the sustainable blue economy.
The Statement highlights several priorities for the future of European ocean observing and operational oceanography, including:
- Securing long-term, stable funding for ocean observations and forecasting systems
- Building a more coordinated and integrated European Ocean Observing System
- Advancing FAIR, interoperable, and accessible ocean data
- Harnessing innovation in observations, modelling, forecasting, and AI-supported applications
- Investing in people, skills, and future ocean professionals
