Embedding EOV coordination in Europe’s ocean observing system
The first EOV clustering event (March 2025, Sopot) discussed a shared understanding of EOV interdependencies across physics, biogeochemistry, and biology, and demonstrated the value of interactive formats such as EOV speed-dating and thematic deep dives (e.g. land–coast–ocean continuum, marine heatwaves). The Sopot event was organised by ObsSea4Clim and BioEcoOcean with an invitation to the BioGeoSea coordinator (BioGeoSea had not started at the time of Clustering Event 1).
Clustering Event 1 identified key challenges that extend beyond individual projects, including scale mismatches, interoperability gaps, and uneven EOV maturity. The outcomes highlighted the need for stronger alignment across European and global frameworks, practical guidance on translating EOVs into indicators and assessments, and more user-focused outreach.
Clustering Event 2 will re-convene the three sister projects, ObsSea4Clim, BioEcoOcean, and BioGeoSea, in a structured, decision-oriented event. It will be held back-to-back with the EuroGOOS General Assembly (21-23 April 2026) – on 20-21 April 2026 at the EuroGOOS Headquarters hosted by the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, Brussels.
Clustering Event 2 will focus on:
- Interoperable data and indicators,
- Coordinated stakeholder and policy engagement,
- A legacy pathway anchored in European ocean observing governance through EuroGOOS,
- Community feedback on the Ocean Pact development.
Building on Event 1 outcomes, Clustering Event 2 will:
- Agree cross-domain EOV linkages that are essential for indicators and assessments.
- Identify concrete steps towards shared best practices, uncertainty handling, and multi-platform & data integration.
- Define concrete EOV Network outputs (e.g. joint statements, shared standards, coordinated observation priorities) and clarify handover pathways beyond project lifetimes.
- Define policy-relevant messages (for further communication at the European Maritime Day and EuroGOOS International Conference, Policy Briefs).
Holding the event back-to-back with the EuroGOOS General Assembly ensures that:
- The EOV coordination is anchored in the European Ocean Observing System development;
- EuroGOOS Members, Regional Systems (ROOS), Working Groups, and Task Teams can engage directly with EOV processes.
