Liège Colloquium: Submesoscale processe – mechanisms, implications and new frontiers

Date
23/05/2016 - 27/05/2016

The 48th edition of the International Liège Colloquium on Ocean Dynamics will take place from 23 to 27 May 2016. The conference will address “Submesoscale processes: mechanisms, implications and new frontiers ”.

International audience will discuss the recent research and discoveries concerning the submesoscale towards international cooperation in this multidisciplinary topic, which involves physics, biogeochemistry, mathematics and computational sciences.

The observational component is essential for the study of the submesoscale processes: recent developments in the observing systems, sensors and platforms now allow capturing the submesoscale features previously difficult if not impossible to observe (eddies, filaments, subduction zones, …).

The ocean variability involves a broad range of interacting scales. While the mesoscale variability has been intensively studied in the past, several open questions remain about the submesoscale variability. Thanks to numerous recent developments the knowledge about submesoscale has been improved. Among these developments, the observational component has played an essential role through technological improvements for measuring these small scales and synergies generated by multiplatform observation systems. The conference programme covers observational, modeling and theoretical approaches for elucidating submesoscale phenomena.
